Joyas de Panama – Churchill
BY ANDREW, ON JULY 27TH, 2010
A couple of weeks ago a co-worker sent me a little care package containing a five-pack of Joyas de Panama Churchills (thanks, Matt!). It so happened I was playing 9 holes with a couple of buddies the next morning so I excitedly brought one of these out to the golf course for a trial run… I was pleasantly surprised!
This was a very nicely assembled Panamanian puro; an attractive cigar with a relatively simple band. The flavor is mild to medium but very rich, and the burn was cool and even. This smoke starts off rich and creamy with some hay notes and finishes with black coffee and a bit more earth.

My new friends at Joyas de Panama gave me a little background info on their cigars:
These cigars are hand-made of organic Cuban seed tobacco. No chemicals, pesticides or machines are used in the growing or production of this sustainable product. The cigars are offered in five classic varieties: Churchill, Especial #1, Torpedo, Robusto and Coronita. The cigars are 100% puros, all Panamanian product. Cigars are individually wrapped in cellophane, and bundled or boxed in packs of 25.
The tobacco is grown in the Chiriqui province of Panama, a lush region well known for it’s agricultural products. The rich volcanic soil and shade canopy give the tobacco it’s caramel color and smooth, rich flavor. The consistent tropical climate of Panama has been a prime location for cigar production, much like her neighbors, Cuba, Nicaragua and Honduras.
The Joyas de Panama factory has been in production for 28 years. The company’s founder, Miriam Padilla, learned the craft from Cubans exiled to Panama. Now, two brothers of the family’s second generation, Braulio and German Zurita have streamlined quality and production. The factory currently produces about 300,000 cigars per year but has the capacity to do four times that much.

This 6.5×53 stick offers a medium brown dry wrapper with tight seams, a smooth firm feel and minimal veins with a slight barnyard aroma. First light reveals very smooth and creamy slightly sweet tobacco, a perfect draw and plenty of rich smoke. The first third ups the smoke production to a medium bodied thick and rich smoke, with very smooth creamy earthy and tabacco flavors with a long smooth finish. 25 min in at the 1/2 way point the only change is the sweetness bringing a slight licorice flavor. The burn is almost razor sharp and the ash is holding a solid 2″ at a time. 45 min in just past the band, the last third holds the same draw flavors adding an earthy finish that gets a bit longer than the start of the stick. Thank you very much to Joyas De Panama for sending this sample for review, I greatly appreciate it!
|

The burn on the Joyas de Panama is spot on. The other samples were consistently well constructed. Ample smoke is produced throughout, it never heats up, and the burn line remains straight throughout. The ash has a great hold, especially for a Corona.
Building in flavor, the final third, a chocolate flavor pops through, and some barnyard notes linger in the background. A very enjoyable conclusion to the mild smoke.

Thanks to The Neat Sheet for including Joyas de Panama cigars in their Portland men's gift guide.

Check it out! pdxneatsheet.com
Cool, last-minute + local gifts for Him
Men are so impossible to shop for during the holidays. We have one week left to find him a cool, manly gift, and we’re over so many boring sweaters and metrosexual grooming products. No offense, but our man is not going to squeal with delight if he opens an expensive jar of shave cream. We don’t even want him to squeal with delight, for that matter. We want him to kind of grunt, in a happy, manly way.
The Neat Sheet is pretty much a girls’ gift guide year round, so we’ve decided to skip the girl’s gifts and focus instead on cool, last-minute local gifts for him. Here are our top ten neat picks for boyfriends, brothers, dads and gramps, so your man gifting won’t be impossible after all.
Joyas de Panama Cigars – Remember the original Colosso Restaurant & Tapas Bar on Northeast Broadway? We flocked there in its early years for spicy Spanish style tapas and hunkered for hours over big glasses of Tempranillo. Well, now the original Portland owners have moved on to yet another tasteful business venture, producing quality artisan cigars that are grown in Panama from organic Cuban seed tobacco grown. Joyas de Panama Cigars are sold statewide, including at Woodstock Liquor, 4324 S.E. Woodstock Blvd.; 503-777-3058. joyasdepanamacigars.com

World of Cigars Review - Joyas de Panama Especial #1
Sunday, 31 May 2009

Joyas de Panama Especial #1 is the first Panamanian cigar reviewed here, and one of the very few Panamanian puros i have smoked. And as such, a pleasant smoke. It is a medium bodied, straight forward cigar, with a mix of spice and cedar as well as some sweet notes.
The delicate wrapper is very interesting in apprearance and seems to be almost transparent in places. Nice feel to the hand and even burn tell about great rolling. The loose draw helps you fill your mouth with lots of smoke with an easy finish.
Goes well on all times of the day. Worth the try for the sake of the Panamanian puro nature.

Note: thanks to Julie from BCB design for sending me a sampler of Joyas de Panama cigars.
Were you aware of the fact that 100% Panamiam puros existed on the market? I was not, that’s for sure. Well, after the first French puro, here is another country to add to the list.
Joyas de Panama cigars are constructed of a long filler with Sumatran wrapper. Five vitolas are currently offered: Churchill (178 x 18 mm), Especial #1 (165 x 16 mm - lonsdale), Torpedo (165 x 19 mm), Robusto (130 x 19 mm) and Coronita (130 x 16 mm - corona). The tobacco is grown in the Chiriqui province, a region with rich volcanic soil. I had a chance to try all the sizes and they present common characteristics, this review is a compilation of my notes about different vitolas.
Appearance : ★★★★☆
The wrapper is quite rough with one or two large veins running through. The stick feels right in hand, it is quite heavy and solid. The band is modest and rather stylish.
Joyas de Panama Cigars
Construction : ★★★★★
During the first examination, I noticed how tightly the cigars were packed - they would not give in. I was expecting some really tight draw and even thought that my smoke will probably be ruined, but surprisingly the draw, even though it was quite tight in the very beginning, was comfortable. The burn was exceptionally straight and regular. Overall, the construction is top-notch.
Flavor : ★★★★☆
The pre-draw was mostly earthy. Upon lighting (which took slightly more time than I’m used to), I noted earthy and peppery flavors. The smoke was a little dry and full-flavored. What follows is a full rich taste of quality tobacco, with regular vanilla and woody notes. I detected no real evolution until the end.
Value : ★★★★☆
I haven’t found many places online where Joyas de Panama can be purchased, on the official website they are sold at $8 stick which I find a little bit high.
Overall Rating : ★★★★½
To finish with, I can say that I wasn’t expecting something as good - being quite sceptical to the idea of Panamian puros in the beginning. It turned out that these are quality cigars, perfectly enjoyable if you do not require an exceptional flavors complexity and with a fine construction.

The Stogie Guys

Stogie Reviews: Joyas de Panama Especial No. 1
Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008
When I think of Panama, the first thing that comes to mind is the canal—not tobacco. But the Central American country has been manufacturing cigars for 100 years and, as evidenced by the Joyas de Panama brand, should be included in the growing list of nations that are exporting tobacco to the U.S. and elsewhere.
Until recently, Joyas de Panama has been sold exclusively in Europe. BCB Design, however, which acquired the brand in the fall, began introducing these Cuban-seed Panamanian puros to the U.S. market at the 76th Annual IPCPR Trade Show in July.
The blend includes a Sumatran wrapper and long-fillers grown in the Chiriqui province of Panama, “a lush region well known for its agricultural products.” Joyas says the leaves are completely organic with “no chemicals, pesticides, or machines…used in he growing or production of this sustainable product.”
The Joyas de Panama factory turns out five different handmade vitolas. I smoked two Especial No. 1s (6.5 x 45) for this review, and each was very difficult to remove from its ultra-tight cellophane sleeve.
Once out in the open, the wrapper gives off plenty of sugar-cookie sweetness. While relatively solid between the fingers, a cross-section inspection reveals the filler is bunched loosely, helping to contribute to the cigar’s even draw despite its thin physique.
The initial taste of vanilla, onion spice, leather, and oak lend some life to the mild- to medium-bodied profile, and moderate increases in burnt sugar down the stretch keep things interesting and pretty satisfying.
I was most impressed with the 80-minute smoke’s construction. Both of my cigars exhibited very even burns, clear draws, and well-fortified ashes.
My overall assessment is that these outstanding physical properties, coupled with the minimal cost, render the Joyas de Panama Especial No. 1 a decent early morning golf, walk, or newspaper companion. That’s why I give it three out of five stogies.
These cigars are pretty respectable. We recommend taking them on the golf course.

World Tobacco Magazine - November 2007
Enthusiastic Response - Joyas de Panama premium 100% hand-rolled cigars are a rare treasure not to be missed, promises BCB Design (Broce Colosso Baur). Now international consumers can decide for themselves.
BCB recently joined forces with Joyas de Panama to bring its hand-rolled cigars (artisan products) to enthusiasts worldwide. Panama has a rich history of cigar manufacturing, which dates back over 100 years. Miriam Padilla and her sons continue this tradition with the Joyas de Panama factory in the small town of La Pintada, nestled in the foothills of the Continental Divide. Miriam has been making cigars for over 26 years, and stepping into her factory is like stepping back in time. Simple wood desks stand in neat rows, while stacks of cigar forms, presses and dried tobacco await the skilled hands of each roller.
Ms. Padilla's cigars are readily found throughout Panama and South America, and soon will be found across the Atlantic and North America. BCB Design (Broce Colosso Baur) recently returned from one of Europe's premium tobacco trade shows, with an enthusiastic response from industry leaders.
BCB is presenting an initial offering of five classics to the market: Churchill, Especial #1, Torpedo, Robusto and Coronita. The cigars are puros, 100% Panamanian product. These quality artisan products are made of organic Cuban seed tobacco. The leaves are hand selected and examined for quality assurance. No chemicals, pesticides or machines are used in the growing or production of this sustainable product. The mid-range price point of this selection is a notable value, and the cigars are offered either in bundles or wood boxes.
The tobacco is grown in the Chiriqui province of Panama, a lush region well known for its agricultural products, from internationally award winning coffees to varied tropical flowers. The rich volcanic soil and shade canopy give the tobacco it's caramel colour and smooth rich flavour.
The consistent tropical climate of Panama makes it a prime location for cigar production, much like her neighbors, Cuba, Nicaragua and Honduras. Panama now boasts the fastest-growing and stable economy in Central America. The world is just now rediscovering this tiny country, for business, tourism and beauty.
The cigars are constructed of a long-filler with Sumatran wrapper. They are mild to medium in flavour, with a smooth, even draw. Each cigar regularly sustains a 1-2 inch ash. These smokes have been described as imparting a spicy nutmeg flavour, blending rich leather with hints of rum and oak. Aromas subtly shift to smooth roasted coffee, cashews and cacao.
This year Joyas de Panama and BCB have come together to bring these premium cigars to the international market. Felicia Colosso Baur and Jurg Baur head up the European distribution out of Zurich, Switzerland. Hans Olaf Wilson and Julie Colosso are working in the US market out of Portland, Oregon. Ana Lorena Broce covers the Latin American market and oversees operations in Panama City, Panama. they seek import and distribution partners worldwide.
What makes this global company unusual in its personal ties. Felicia and Julie are sisters, whose mother, a Panamanian native, recently retired from the USA to her homeland. Ana Lorena is a cousin and Panama native. The group came together with a vision to share with the world one of the quality products Panama has to offer, meanwhile supporting a local Panamanian community. As Hans says, "We are here to give something back...We will be promoting fair trade and providing employment opportunities to this small community."
The group has a broad and diverse business background. Felicia owns a marketing communications company. She shared her talents by refining the traditional graphic image of the classic 'Joyas de Panama' logo, cigar band and box label. She also creates the marketing literature. Jurg is an alumnus of Thunderbird University, the world's leading international business graduate school, and has over 10 years of gloabl corporate work under his belt. Hans has been self-employed for over a decade. Ana Lorena, with a BBA and MBA from Georgia University and Nova Southern University, is the former Insurance Commissioner of Panama (1999 - 2004) and also works in insurance, real estate and property management. Julie has been a successful entrepreneur and trend forcaster for 15 years. "What people want are specialty, handcrafted, quality products", says Julie. "Gone are the days of 'awe' over mass-production and volume. The consumer is not naive to the compromise, and will bypass convenience to find a premium product. Joyas de Panama cigars are exactly what discerning consumers are seeking."

Dogwatch Cigar Radio
Episode #183
August 16,2008
And then I know Bob, you and I smoked another brand new cigar.
We ran into these guys at the show.
Joyas de Panama.
JdP
JdP
They gave us 6 different votolas to try. Which size did you try?
Had a smaller one, more of a corona size. I tend to gravitate to that size.
I think I smoked a robusto this week. What did you think of it?
I enjoyed it a lot. Surprisingly. Because typically when I see something like this
because these Joya de Panama are made in Panama, panama grown tobacco, of course cuban origin seeds and all that.
It had a Nice delicate wrapper on it,but not one that tore real easy in my hands.
It was a real nice light color.
Very much to the mild side of medium, but not all the way down to mild.
Good earthy flavors a little nuttiness. I had it first thing in the morning with some
coffee and it was really enjoyable.
And I think this cigar is one that will fit most people earlier in the day.
It is, as you say, a little milder cigar.
It's got a lot of light, bright sophisticated flavors, and I think it might get lost after dinner, after a really heavy dinner.
If you had some heavy port or some scotch, it might not hold up to that.
But in the earlier in the day I thought this was a very enjoyable cigar.
And I think People have to take that into account when they start looking for different cigars to smoke.. because A lot of times even a mild cigar can have very good, interesting flavors in it.
Smoke at the right time of day.
Don't expect this to be one to land on your pallet because they do take a little bit more finesse maybe to enjoy all of the intricacies of it.
I don't mean that in a snobbish kind of way.
I mean it's kind of like the difference between 'chocolate volcano dessert' and a 'tiramisu'.
You know, it's two different worlds of flavor, but both have flavor to it.
(Laughter)
I'm laughing because someone is making fun of us here in the chat room.
(Laughter)
And so truffle?
No there was not truffle in that, sorry.

Cigar-Review.com 13 October 2008
Rating: A-
Pre-light Aroma and Flavor: Pleasant & made me excited to light up.
Burn: Perfect!! I mean really nice. I was very impressed!!
Smoking Notes: I really had no idea what to expect with this cigar. It was well behaved with lots of smoke & EXCELLENT flavors. The draw was a bit tight, but it was not an issue. The flavors started as a creamy cocoa & evolved into an earthy, woodsy flavor. A great combo that made me excited for each puff.
Overall Experience and Rating: This was an excellent cigar that I WILL smoke again! The beginning flavor of creamy cocoa was just wonderful. I mean really, really good!! I highly enjoyed my time with this cigar & have no trouble giving it an A-.”
